Dead Man Walking

Fall is in the air! OK, maybe that's just the pumpkin spice candles. This is LA, after all. But it's October, and that means the Walking Dead is back!

Sherlocked

It's October already! I've been so busy I almost didn't notice my favorite month arrive. Appropriately enough, my fellow mad scientist Jamie S. Rich and I are busy in the lab creating a horror story for Image Comics.

October also means Halloween, and a time to celebrate all things scary, devious, or that fall into a grey area of being bad but oh so fun. So I figured it was time to draw some more villains this year! First up is a slightly less traditional villainess, however...Irene Adler, as portrayed by Lara Pulver on the BBC series "Sherlock". No disrespect to the RDJ films, but Asperger's looks a lot sexier on Benedict Cumberbatch, and nothing at all looks perfectly fabulous on this version of Ms. Adler.

Let's Dance

Some exciting milestones for me and my comics, as summer comes to its official end (now, if someone would just please tell Southern California that summer is over, because the triple digit temps are seriously overstaying their welcome). First off, I just completed pencils and inks on my first full-length graphic novel, and second project with Jamie S. Rich!

Damn, that's a lot of pages...
Of course, the kicker is I still have to COLOR all 120 pages. But hey, I'm allowed to celebrate a little! Drawing 120 pages is no joke, and it's my biggest undertaking as an artist to date. After spending almost a year with this story and the characters, I'm a little sad to leave them behind, but fortunately, I have my next project already lined up...

Jamie and I are collaborating again, on a project with a slightly different tone for both of us...horror! Good thing I stocked up on ink! These will be the characters you'll see in my sneak peek photos and hear about in my tweets in the coming months. (Are you following me on Twitter yet? No? Why not? @SadMeganGirls!)

Back to the drawing table!

Have Your Cake And Eat It Too

I've been drawing this character, Will, for over 9 months and 100 pages now. And yet this panel might be my favorite image of him I've done so far:

"Hell's Treasure" Kickstarter Campaign is LIVE!!

Grab your wallets and dump out your change jars, because the Kickstarter campaign to fund "Hell's Treasure" is live

I'm a little late posting this to the blog, but the campaign will run through August 18, so any little bit of help you can give brings us closer to me having the budget to illustrate this entire graphic novel, in full glorious color, and bring this fantasy story to life.

Here's a couple more pages if you're not convinced!

Gig Poster

A recent illustration I did to promote my brother's band Izalith and their LA stop on their first tour. It was a fun opportunity to draw something a little different than I usually do!

For those of you in LA, Izalith will be playing tomorrow night at Amplyfi in Hollywood. The show starts at 7 PM, and in the words of the venue's own website, "AMPLYFi is located in the alley behind Astroburger in the 5600 block of Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA, 90038. We are between Gower and El Centro." You can purchase tickets here.

No Angel

While my and Jamie S. Rich's upcoming book for Oni Press has occupied most of my free time these days, we're coming up on the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to fund another graphic novel I contributed artwork to!

I'll link to the campaign once it goes live, but in the meantime, here's a teaser of my process for first pitch page (page 45 of the final book, to be exact) of "Hell's Treasure" by Robert Jeschonek

Suit and Tie

A little teaser from the book I'm currently working on with Jamie S. Rich. Because sometimes you wake up and realize you've been so busy you've neglected your blog for way, way too long!

Who's That Girl?

No, it's not Zooey Deschanel. (*cringe*) It's It Girl! Jamie S. Rich tapped me to do a pin-up of the title heroine of It Girl and the Atomics for this summer's upcoming trade paperback, and I took the term "pin-up" a bit literally.

Issue #10 of It Girl and the Atomics comes out tomorrow, May 15th, at comic stores everywhere and on ComiXology for you digital types!

Mrs. Draper

WIP of the fabulous Megan Draper from "Mad Men"...the start of what I hope to be a series of portraits of the women of that show. She's got a lot of haters out there, but I personally love Megan, and not just because she has an awesome name. ;)

Pretty Poison

A quickie color sketch done today, while watching a few episodes of my favorite childhood cartoon..."Batman: The Animated Series"! I drew a lot of inspiration as an illustrator from Bruce Timm's designs for that series, particularly his drawings of women.

Updates!

Whew! So, 2013 is off to a rocking start here in my little kitchen studio. I looked up and suddenly it was almost April!

So, what have I been keeping so busy with, you ask? Well, aside from storyboarding, I've had some exciting projects going on! For starters, working with Visual Storyline, I illustrated some pop art posters that were on display at Paypal's booth at SXSW this year! You can check out some of the final images in Paypal's video from the event.

I also had the good fortune to connect with writer Robert Jeschonek, who found my work online and hired me on to do some artwork for an upcoming Kickstarter to launch his graphic novel, "Hell's Treasure". I'll be giving some sneak peeks here on the blog of some of the finished pages I did for the Kickstarter, but for now, here's the cover illustration!

26.2

On Sunday I will be running the LA Marathon! It's my first full marathon, so obviously I'm biting my nails at this point. So as I head off to begin carb loading, enjoy this fun drawing from yesterday, which goes out to all my runner friends who have inflicted this torture on themselves, or are planning to.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Last year, for Valentine's Day, I quite literally fled the country, and spent it safely in Rio de Janeiro, far away from this annual pink and red nightmare. That's sadly not an option this year. But, in honor of all the false starts, bad timing, and quietly longing from the other side of the drawing room, here's a Valentine's Day sketch with a more restrained, British sensibility, featuring Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley from "Downton Abbey".

Trust No One

The year is off to a busy, bumpy start, so I haven't spent as much time sketching as I'd like to. (I've done plenty of drawing, but it's all for work, and I can't share the fun projects with you guys just yet.) But as I've been recently rewatching one of my favorite TV shows, The X-Files, from the beginning, I found some time to do this quick sketch of Mulder and Scully.

The truth is out there!
